David SimpsonIn 2010, two hip implants made by DePuy were withdrawn after safety concerns and we understand that some 40,000 patients may have to be investigated because of fears that metal on metal hip replacements may be disintegrating, destroying muscle tissue and leaking metal into the bloodstream; it is reported that surgeons identify a failure rate of nearly 50 per cent after six years, whereas the hips should be pain-free for 10-15 years.

Claims are currently being prepared in respect of the DePuy ASR and ASR XL.

All patients with these products are advised to see a doctor to check levels of cobalt and chromium in their blood and whether they have any muscle damage.

In respect of other brands of metal on metal implant it is recommended to have annual check-ups for five years.
