Family law solicitors at Coles Miller are supporting new research which shows that mediation works in 73% of divorce cases – making it cheaper, quicker and less stressful for couples.
Mediation keeps the divorce out of court. The separating couple remains in control at all times, instead of letting a judge decide their future.
The process starts with a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM). New research ahead of Family Mediation Week (January 20-24 2020) shows that:
- 46% of mediation involved children
- 25% of mediation involved property and finance
- 29% involved all issues.
Coles Miller Partner Richard Perrins, head of the firm’s Family Department, said: “Mediation is the smart way to get divorced because you stay in control of what is happening.
“It is also much faster and cheaper because it doesn’t involve going to court,” he added.
The research was carried out by the Family Mediation Council. Data was based on 122 responses from mediators who between them had carried out 8,479 MIAMs in the preceding six months.
FMC chair John Taylor said: “It is not surprising that so many people (73%) who attend a first meeting with a mediator chose to go on to mediate…most realise it is a conversation worth having.”
