Client Testimonials

"I would not hesitate in recommending Richard Perrins to someone. He was professional and helpful. But, the absolute best quality he showed me was empathy. I felt that Richard was helping me 100% of the time. He also reassured me on several occasions when the other side sent unpleasant letters. Family Law FAQs

When should I contact a family solicitor?

You may benefit from legal advice if you are considering separation or divorce, need to agree arrangements for children, want to resolve financial matters, or are experiencing difficulties in a relationship. Getting advice early from a family solicitor can help you understand your options and make informed decisions.

What does a family solicitor do?

A family solicitor advises and represents clients on matters including divorce, financial settlements, arrangements for children, cohabitation disputes, prenuptial agreements and domestic abuse. They can negotiate on your behalf, prepare legal documents and represent you in court where necessary.

How much does a family solicitor cost?

Costs depend on the complexity of your case, the work required and whether an agreement can be reached. Some services may be available for a fixed fee, while others are charged by the hour. Your solicitor should explain their fees and provide information about likely costs at the outset.

Can a family solicitor help me reach an agreement without going to court?

Yes. Solicitors can negotiate directly with the other party or their solicitor and advise on alternatives such as mediation and collaborative law. Reaching an agreement outside court may reduce costs and stress, although court proceedings may be necessary if important issues remain unresolved.

How do I choose the right family solicitor?

Look for a solicitor with experience in the type of family matter you need help with. Ask about their approach, likely costs, communication arrangements and the options available for resolving your case. Feeling comfortable discussing sensitive personal matters with your solicitor is also important.

What shall I bring to the first meeting?

For your first meeting, you don’t need to have everything perfectly organised — the family solicitor will guide you. However, bringing a few key items can help them understand your situation more quickly:

  • Any relevant documents Court orders, agreements, letters, emails, or paperwork relating to your relationship, children, finances, or property.
  • Identification A passport or driving licence, plus proof of address, may be needed for verification.
  • Key dates and information For example: when you separated, details about children’s arrangements, or a brief timeline of events.
  • Financial information (if relevant) Basic details about income, property, savings, or debts can help if your matter involves finances.
  • Questions you want to ask Many people find it helpful to write these down so nothing gets forgotten.
